WHAT IS THE BEYOND THE BUMP CONCUSSION PROGRAM?
The Beyond the Bump Concussion program is a school wide program designed to remove the complications of diagnosing, treating, and releasing athletes after a concussion or suspected concussion. If your child's school is enrolled in our "Beyond the Bump" concussion program, it entitles you to some free and discounted services at Performance Brain Health Centers.
WHO IS PERFORMANCE BRAIN HEALTH?
Performance Brain Health Centers is Colorado's leader in concussion care. With doctors of neuropsychology, as well as vision and vestibular therapists, we are the only "active" concussion management and treatment clinics in Colorado.
Dr. David Stephens, Performance Brain Health's director of neuropsychology (PsyD), and all of our staff use only the most effective, evidence based, treatments and system to detect, manage and resolve concussions. Evidence based practices are designed to reduce risk factors, decrease treatment times, improve cognitive performance & eliminate functional maladaptations.
Risk Intervention & RTL/RTP
RBANS testing that measures effort and can detect even subclinical symptoms
Kinetisense screening to measure postural, vestibular & vision dysfunction
Sensory integration & gait mechanics
Cognitive and emotional skills
Improve your athlete's performance and reduce risk of future concussion
WHY SHOULD I HAVE MY CHILD'S CONCUSSION OR SUSPECTED CONCUSSION EVALUATED?
~ Our primary concern is the health and welfare of your child. Concussions are a serious injury and should never be ignored. Unresolved concussions can lead to higher risks for injury and in rare cases a second impact may even cause death.
~ Colorado Senate Bill 11-040 mandates all Colorado athletes over the age of 11, playing in a school or club sport that sustain a "suspected" or witnessed blow to the head be evaluated by a healthcare professional before they return to play.
~ Schools and clubs are required to follow very specific guidelines for student athletes that sustain a concussion or are suspected of sustaining a concussion. Your school or club may not allow your child to return to play until they have followed those guidelines mandated by the state of Colorado and CHSAA.
~ Colorado law limits who may release athletes into play following a concussion. MD, DO, PsyD, NP, PA are the only practitioners licensed to do so.
~ CHSAA requires graduated RTP (return to play) & RTL (return to learn) protocols. A release from your doctor may not necessarily release your child into play. All high school athletes must complete a graduated return process.

I THINK MY CHILD HAS A CONCUSSION, WHAT DO I DO?
~ If your child's injury is life threatening, visit your local emergency department or call 911.
~ Call Performance Brain Health. If your school is enrolled in our Beyond the Bump concussion program you are entitled to a no cost evaluation.
WHY ARE CONCUSSION EVALUATIONS FREE?
~ If your child's school is enrolled in the Beyond the Bump concussion program, their school has contracted with us to provide evaluations free of charge.
WHEN SHOULD I GET A CONCUSSION EVALUATION?
~ If your child was removed from play with a suspected head injury.
~ If your child sustained a previous concussion and symptoms are not resolving.
~ you suspect your child may have hit their head & sustained a concussion.
WHY SHOULD MY CHILD HAVE A BRAIN HEALTH EXAM?
~ Brain health exams are a valuable tool used to help determine the functional capacity of your child's brain. Concussion, both diagnosed and undiagnosed, along with concussive force injury causes many treatable conditions. Having a brain health exam can help in identifying those conditions.
~ At Performance Brain Health Centers we use research based and clinical techniques to evaluate neuro-physical performance. BESS or Balance Error Scoring System is the clinical gold standard for concussion detection immediately following an injury. NPAS or Neuro Postural Adaptation Scaling can detect small subtle changes to posture and balance that is sometimes attributed to head injury. This objective neurological physical assessment system allows us to perform concussion and brain health exams quickly and affordably.
~ It is important to note that often times the traditional ImPact concussion test is clinically irrelevant. At Performance Brain Health, we utilize the RBANS neuro-cognitive evaluation. The RBANS, or Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status, can be used as a pre-participation cognitive screening and as a post concussion evaluation tool. This test is administered by our staff in a one-on-one environment and tests the following:
~ Immediate Memory
~ Visuospatial/Constructional ability
~ Delayed Memory
